Autumn dawns the return of cooler air with crisp mornings and chilly evenings which can cause mixed emotions as this is the most powerful of all the seasonal transitions as the daylight becomes shorter and we start to slow down. These changes can cause the skin to feel itchy and dry.

Halotherapy - is using steam as an integral part of your skincare routine, with most benefits gained by practicing a minimum of once a week as a self-care routine before sleep.

Salt steam inhalation can be used as a meditation in mindful breathing as the ionic air circulates through your senses delivering a rich woody autumnal aroma, warming and calming the skin removing impurities and drawing out bacteria from under the surface of the skin in a gentle moist air bath.

This seasonal mix of organic cacao often used in ceremonial sacred spaces to give thanks, with Ceylon cinnamon, air-dried juniper berries to help reduce inflammation, and pink peppercorns to improve circulation, mixed with Himalayan salt will immediately enhance the senses, promoting a warm and decongesting experience for the sinuses, leaving the skin deeply cleansed and toxin free. I prefer to use dried plant matter so the water can rehydrate the berries and deliver the true fresh essence, immersing the skin and senses and surrounding you with the environmental balance of the season.

Start with clean skin. Boil approximately a cup full of water or enough to fill a medium size ceramic or glass bowl. Place your bowl onto a folded towel on a table or somewhere you can sit comfortably with your face over the steam and add a teaspoon of salt infusion. Pour the boiling water into the bowl dissolving the salt and hydrating the petals. Lean over the bowl keeping your face a minimum of 12 inches or 30 centimetres’ away from the water and drape a towel over your head creating a little tent to keep in the steam. The steam should feel soothing and not too hot. If it feels uncomfortable then adjust your head higher away from the bowl. Keep your eyes open as the steam will also moisten the eyes and soften the oil ducts around the eyes.

Sit over the steam for 5 minutes and build up to 10 to 15 as you feel comfortable breathing in and out of the nose. After the steam gently wipe away the perspiration with a clean cloth and then cool with hydrosol to regulate ph levels and massage skin with facial oil and drink a glass of water.
